2. PRINTS OF OLD LISBON

The pictures presented in this portfolio are exact copies of a series of engravings that are conserved in the Biblioteca Casanatense de Roma (Casanatense Library of Rome). The Royal Palace, the St. Amato Church in Belem, the Belem Tower, and the Royal Church and Monastery of Belem in the ancient city of Lisbon in Portugal are shown twice, once in bright sunlight and again in softer, more muted light. The scenes are shown prior to the devastating earthquake that struck Lisbon in 1755. These types of engraved images, called “optical views,” were common in Europe in the 18th century. They were presented on the inside of an optical device and people could look at them through small holes. This way of presenting pictures could be regarded as a predecessor/anticipation of photography.
