This set of five Shaker boxes ranging from 4 to 10 inches in length is a replica of boxes that Russ Filbeck made for Mrs. Carter. There is a mounted reproduction of a letter from President Carter to President Sadat dated Oct. 21, 1977, with an original signature from President Carter. The letter is accompanied by a black-and-white photograph in a 15 x 19-inch frame showing a smiling President Sadat and a 14 x 10-inch carved oil-on-wood relief showing a more serious view of the Egyptian leader. Four political cartoons depicting the magnitude of the challenge have been signed by President Carter. Charlotte Scott reflects the roots of her Iroquois relatives in this 20 x 24-inch oil-on-linen painting of a cactus. This one from Oct. 27, 1977, approximately one month before Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's historic visit to Israel, attempts to encourage a dialogue. In a five-page handwritten letter to Menachem Begin on Aug. 3, 1978, one month before peace talks began at Camp David, President Carter invites the Israeli prime minister to meet with President Anwar Sadat to discuss peace. When President Carter was notified that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize, Secret Service Agent Mantica woke him up with the news. Master chair maker Russell Filbeck made this replica of an Appalachian-style ladder-back rocking chair especially for the Winter Weekend. The cherry, six-slat rocking chair is 44 inches tall, 26 inches wide, and 44 inches deep and is a reproduction of one that Filbeck made for President Carter. The hickory bark seat is woven in a herringbone pattern and finished with four coats of oil and paste wax. The slats are engraved with the Carter Center's motto, "Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope." Filbeck is the author of "Making Ladder Back Chairs With Russ Filbeck," for which President Carter wrote the foreword.
