Silent Auction Catalog - Carter Center Winter Weekend 2012

President and Mrs. Carter appreciate the many gifts they have received from around the world. Since there is not enough space at The Carter Center to display all of them, a few of these items are made available through this special event to support the work of The Carter Center. Values expressed in this catalog represent certified appraisals, estimates based on sales of comparable items at previous Winter Weekend auctions, or sales of similar items from Internet sites such as eBay. Any amount paid above the stated value will be considered a donation to The Carter Center and will be tax-deductible. The minimum acceptable bid for any of these items is $50.

All bids by fax or online must be received by 4:00 p.m. PST on March 10, 2012.

1. TIP O'NEILL CELEBRATION MEMORABILIA

Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill Jr., one of the most colorful and influential speakers in the history of the House of Representatives, was recognized for 50 years in politics at a retirement ceremony on March 17, 1986. These two highball glasses from that ceremony are made of Galway Irish crystal and are in a presentation box lined with Kelly green fabric. Also included is a program from the evening containing many photos and comments on his illustrious career.

2. MOTHER OF PEARL BOX

A hinged-top metal box measuring 3½ x 1½ x 2½ inches has hand-tooled plants and birds in relief on the sides. It is accented with a mother-of-pearl top covered with etched butterflies, plants, and flowers. The box was donated to The Carter Center in 2003 and has been on display in the office of the director of the Conflict Resolution Program.

3. SILK DOGWOOD BLOSSOMS

Artist Anna Swimmer donated this branch of silk dogwood blossoms in an 18 x 12 x 3-inch shadowbox frame to The Carter Center in 1998. The branch is displayed against a light-colored background that contains the artist's signature. An engraved tag in the bottom left corner lists the donor's name along with the name of the recipient and date of the donation.

4. BEIJING OLYMPICS MASCOT SET

This framed set contains the five miniature dolls created as mascots for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Each doll has gold-painted eyes and accents. The five names are a part of the phrase "Beijing huanying ni" that translates to "Welcome to Beijing." The set comes with a certificate of authenticity and was given to President and Mrs. Carter in China in December 2007.

5. REPUBLIC OF PERU LEATHER PROCLAMATION

This leather proclamation banner is decorated with the flag and coat of arms of the Republic of Peru. The inscription reads: "Republic of Peru recognizes with much appreciation and admiration, the students, families and professors of C.E. # 70206 of Chococoniri, Mr. President Jimmy Carter for his nobility, and agent in the quality and standards of human rights, whom today we greet on the occasion of this golden celebration (50 years of institutional life) of educational function in the community of Amyara of Chococoniri. Peru - Puno - Chococoniri, of this November 9th of 2003."

6. CHINESE LACQUER PLATE

A multilayer process was necessary to create this lacquer plate. The famous Chang dynasty mask image was discovered at the Sanxingdui archaeological site in 1987. The type of lacquer process used requires more than 10 steps and many months to complete. When done the image has a three-dimensional appearance. The plate is in a blue presentation box with a stand and certificate of authenticity. The item was given to Mrs. Carter and donated to The Carter Center in the spring of 2007.

7. THE HUMANITARIAN HAND TOOLS HABITAT PRINT

A beautiful artist's proof print titled "The Humanitarian Hand Tools" features a collage of clothes, a work belt, and building tools with President Carter's name. The original painting was created by Shirley Arnold. This print is beautifully framed, has been signed by the artist, and measures 32 x 26 inches.

8. EXCLUDED WORLD NO. 2

President and Mrs. Carter received this limited-edition lithograph numbered 11 of 50 from the artist, Tito Maan Mangiola, at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga., on Feb. 23, 2007. The original was painted in 1995 and depicts a slum outside a modern city. The image measures about 18 x 20 inches and is in a frame measuring 24 x 28 inches. It is signed and numbered by the artist.

10. PLATTER DECORATED WITH IMAGE OF PRESIDENT CARTER'S CHILDHOOD HOME

The Presidents' Summit for America's Future was held in Louisville, Ky., from April 27 - 29, 1997. The summit reviewed the American presidencies from Johnson through Clinton. As a gift, Jerry E. Abramson, the mayor of the city of Louisville, gave each president or his estate a serving platter that featured an image of the president's childhood home. The image for this platter was created by Colleen Gipson and Vikki Mitchell. The platter was made by Louisville Stoneware.

President Carter has signed the neck of this guitar crafted by Manuel Rodriguez and Sons. It has a solid cedar top, laminated Indian rosewood back and sides, rosewood fingerboard, African mahogany neck, and gold machine head. The guitar comes in a hard-shell case.

14. ISLAMIC ENGRAVED STONE

A 19 x 23-inch shadowbox frame contains a replica of an ancient engraved stone. The translation of the inscription on the stone begins: "In the Name of God." It was given to President Carter by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Mosaad Bin Abdul-aziz Al Saud at The Carter Center on July 21, 2005.

15. CAMPAIGN PHOTOGRAPH

President Carter has signed a photo that shows him campaigning with help from a young supporter. The back of the infant's outfit reads: "Bring Out The Best in GA - Jimmy Carter." The photograph hung in The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum for 25 years until the renovation in 2009.

16. THE PRECIOUS DING OF HARMONY

The ding, an ancient ceremonial cauldron, is a symbol of power and dignity and has been considered a treasure of the Chinese nation since ancient times. The Precious Ding of Harmony is made of a glassy jade-like material that is crystal clear with a warm and watery luster. The ding is made with the wish that the nation be stable, strong, and rich and that the home be prosperous. It was given to President and Mrs. Carter by the Chinese State Counselor Tang Jiaxuan on Dec. 4, 2007.

17. BOLIVIAN DOLL CARVINGS

Two colorful wooden carvings show a man and woman in traditional Bolivian attire. The man is wearing a poncho and chullo, while the woman carries an infant in an aguayo (a traditional fabric sling). Each seated figure is 9½ inches high and carved from a solid block of wood. The carvings were given to the Carters by Bolivian president Juan Evo Morales Ayma at a meeting in New York on Sept. 26, 2007.

18. PRESIDENT OBAMA INAUGURAL MEDALLION

Massachusetts artist Daniel Altshuler created this bronze medallion to commemorate the Jan. 20, 2009, inauguration of President Barack Obama. The medallion is embossed with the presidential seal on one side and a profile of President Obama on the other. It comes with a wooden display stand in a specially designed presentation case.

19. PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH INAUGURAL PROGRAM

A history of previous inaugurals is included in this program from the second inauguration of George W. Bush. The beautifully bound program also contains a set of 14 x 17-inch prints titled "Vision of America." The eight museum-quality prints include two images created to honor the Lewis and Clark expedition, two photos with Teddy Roosevelt, two on the Louisiana Purchase, a Harper's Weekly reproduction with Teddy Roosevelt, and a painting by Albert Bierstat.

20. STAR OF DAVID SCULPTURE

A beautiful sculpture by Bonnie Srolovitz-Berkowicz stands 11 inches tall and features two revolving triangles that form a gold Star of David when spinning. The label on the plaque reads: "To President Jimmy Carter from The American Jewish Committee, Thursday, Oct. 29, 1987."

21. GONE WITH THE WIND

Two items are presented here to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the 75th anniversary of the publication of "Gone With the Wind." The first is a print showing an open copy of the title novel on a table with several other books and a kerosene lamp. The print, by Georgia artist Joseph Bagby, is numbered 292 of 750, is 19½ x 24½ inches, and is in a 27 x 33-inch frame. Accompanying the print is a rare original movie program for the Atlanta world premiere of the film and well-preserved magazine and newspaper clippings from January 1940.

22. SPOKESHAVE

A spokeshave is a tool used to shape and smooth wooden rods and shafts - often for wheel spokes or chair legs. This 10½-inch, custom-designed spokeshave was created by master chair designer and builder Russell Filbeck. It is made of cocobolo (an exotic rosewood), is waxed, and has a hand-rubbed oil finish. This is a replica of President Carter's personal spokeshave.

23. CHINESE VASE WITH WOVEN COVER

A small porcelain vase 6⅞ inches high and 2⅜ inches at the base has a woven red and natural straw cover with black painted designs. It was given to Mrs. Carter by Chinese Ambassador Li on Aug. 10, 1999, in Plains, GA.

24. DELICATE CHINESE PAPER CUTTINGS

A marbled frame measuring 13 x 13 inches holds four decorative butterfly and flower groupings. The silver, red, pink, and blue butterflies and flowers were cut from thin paper and mounted on a silver background with a burgundy mat. The paper cuttings were purchased by Georgia Public Service Commissioner and former state Senator Bobby Rowan during a trip to China and given to President and Mrs. Carter in 1998. Each inset is approximately 4 inches in diameter.

25. ORIGINAL PAINTING BY GAIL RUTGERS

Michigan artist Gail Rutgers created and signed this original landscape painting. A young girl standing on a pedestal holding a bowl on her head is the focus of the framed work that measures 10¼ x 8¼ inches. It was given to the Carters in 1998 and has been on display in the Conflict Resolution section of The Carter Center.

26. WOODEN CROSS SCULPTURE

During the Stanford University Armenia-Azerbaijan Initiative in San Jose, Calif., on Sept. 19, 1993, this intricately carved wooden cross was given to Joyce Neu of The Carter Center by Anait Bayandour. The cross was carved by an unknown Armenian artist and has a plant motif in the middle and braids on the margins. It measures 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide and is on a 7½-inch wide base.

27. CALLIGRAPHY SCROLL

The text of a Song dynasty Buddhist poem is written in calligraphy on this delicate scroll. The framed scroll was given to President Carter on Dec. 6, 2007, in Beijing by the China University of Politics and Law. It was created by Dongbang Tugin, a guest professor of the university who was voted one of "China's Top 10 Artists" in 2004.

28. PETRA CITY MEDALLION

A ceramic medallion 6½ inches in diameter showing the façade of the Great Temple of Petra in Jordan is mounted against a red velvet background. "Jordan" appears above the façade on the medallion and the phrase "Petra - Red Rose City" is below it. It was given to President Carter during a human rights conference in November 2003 and has been on display in his Carter Center office area.

29. CAMP DAVID CHAPEL PLATTER

31. HAND-PAINTED PLATE

The Dutch pottery factory Regina was founded in 1898 and is famous for the Gouda style of pottery. The current owner, Corry Ammerlaan, made the plate and hand painted it with the inscription "specially designed for Rosalynn Carter in the Netherlands." The plate is 7½ inches in diameter and features two blue flowers and a rose-colored butterfly on a white background.
