Who is most vulnerable to contracting malaria?

Malaria most affects people who live, work, and sleep in unscreened houses where mosquitoes can easily enter through open eaves and windows.  Malaria kills approximately 1 million young children - under five years of age - per year. Many more suffer from anemia and learning impairments associated with the disease.  Pregnant women, their unborn children, and infants are particularly vulnerable to malaria, which is a major cause of maternal mortality and low birth weight.
