ATLANTA…Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will participate in a panel discussion on his 1994 North Korea intervention that averted war and holds lessons for dealing with the current North Korean nuclear weapons threat. "A Moment of Crisis: North Korea" is part of the 2006-07 Conversations at The Carter Center series and takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and will also be webcast live at www.cartercenter.org.

The panel also includes former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who was part of the delegation to North Korea; Dr. Marion Creekmore, who accompanied President Carter to North Korea and wrote about the trip in his current book, "A Moment of Crisis;" and Dr. James Laney, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea during the 1994 visit. After a discussion of the international developments leading to the trip, the intervention, and its aftermath, the group will answer audience questions.

During a recent interview, President Carter called Creekmore's book "a remarkable analysis of how the 1994 situation is being almost exactly duplicated now, and how the two are related. Any American who's interested in and concerned about the North Korean threat should read this book."

There will be 150 copies of "A Moment of Crisis" pre-signed by President Carter and Dr. Creekmore for sale before the panel discussion. These will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Dr. Creekmore also will be available to sign books after the event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are required for Conversations, which is free to the public, on a first-come, first-seated basis.

All Conversations will be held in the Ivan Allen Pavilion of The Carter Center, located at One Copenhill, 453 Freedom Parkway, in Atlanta, and are webcast live at www.cartercenter.org. For directions, go to http://www.cartercenter.org/about/faqs/directions.html.
