Yawei Liu, Ph.D.


Director, China Program


Dr. Liu was appointed director of the China Program in 2005, having served as associate director since 1998. He has been a member of numerous Carter Center election observation missions to China and Latin America. He also is an associate professor of American history at Georgia Perimeter College.


Dr. Liu received his bachelor's degree in history at the Xian Foreign Languages Institute in Shaanxi, China, a master's degree from the University of Hawaii in recent U.S. history, and a doctorate in U.S. diplomatic history.


Dr. Liu has written numerous articles on China's political developments and grassroots democracy and is the editor of the China Elections and Governance Web site.
