Statement by Former U.S. President and Nobel Laureate
Jimmy Carter on the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize
Oct. 10, 2008
Rosalynn and I congratulate Finland's former president, Martti Ahtisaari, on receiving
the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. As both public servant and private citizen, he has dedicated
his life to mediation of conflicts around the world. Shaped by his own childhood
experience of sudden displacement during a Soviet invasion of his hometown in Finland,
Mr. Ahtisaari has quietly and steadfastly worked for peace and reconciliation throughout
his career. Because of his keen mediation skills, opposing groups have found their way
forward, not through war or violence, but in peace. We offer our sincere best wishes and
gratitude.
