Statement by Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on the
2006 Nobel Peace Prize
13 October 2006
Rosalynn and I congratulate Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank on receiving the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. The use of microcredit in Bangladesh and other poor nations is a remarkable tool in efforts to reduce poverty, stimulate local economies, and help impoverished families to generate income. We applaud their willingness to invest in the future of people, especially poor women, who would not otherwise be able to obtain even small loans, giving them a chance to earn a living and renew hope for their communities.
