Trachoma Control Program – Program Reports

Each year, the Carter Center's Trachoma Control Program hosts an annual Program Review at The Carter Center in Atlanta. The reviews are modeled after similar meetings of Guinea worm eradication programs. These meetings have been supported by The Carter Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization, beginning in Pakistan in 1988. The objectives of the Program Reviews are to assess the status of each national trachoma control program, identify challenges encountered in creating national programs, assess impediments and problems in program implementation, and to discuss solutions and promote sharing and standardization of information.

In most cases, the national coordinator of the program makes the country presentation and the ensuing discussions are primarily between peers working together for trachoma control. The presentations include epidemiological data and sociological studies on trachoma in each country, and an update on the status of program interventions being undertaken. Each year, special topics are addressed in depth, including monitoring and evaluation, health education, school health programs, and latrine promotion programs.
