We are pleased to report tremendous success from this work. Currently, Mali is seeking official validation from the World Health Organization that it is free of trachoma as a public health problem, and Niger’s elimination efforts remain on track toward the same outcome.
Trachoma is the world's leading cause of preventable blindness and threatens 136 million people. The infectious eye disease causes terrible pain, disability, and stigma, and keeps communities stuck in a cycle of poverty. Women and children are at greatest risk.
Trachoma is both preventable and treatable, which means a person's eyesight can be saved before it is too late. Using proven and low-cost methods, The Carter Center and its partners have eliminated blinding trachoma in Ghana.
