Carter Center Statement in Remembrance of Stonewall

The Carter Center joins all those remembering the Stonewall Uprising, which began on this date in 1969. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights, and the Center stands in support and solidarity today, throughout PRIDE Month, and always.

As a country, the United States has come a long way since the oppression that led to Stonewall, but there is still much work to be done to achieve equality and justice. The Carter Center supports the principles behind the Equality Act, a bill in Congress that would prohibit discrimination in public accommodations based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

For its own part, the Center seeks to be an institution that welcomes, values, and celebrates LGBTQIA+ colleagues and friends and provides them a safe space to be their authentic selves without fear of judgment or recrimination. The march to equality begins with the step of acceptance.
