Rosalynn and I are deeply grieved by the loss of Kofi Annan, and we extend our condolences to his wife Nane and to the other members of his family. Kofi was a cherished personal friend and an inspiration to all who knew him. As secretary-general of the United Nations, as the leader of The Elders, and as a wonderful negotiator who worked to end conflict and bring reconciliation in Kenya, Myanmar, Cyprus, Syria and other troubled places, Kofi demonstrated his life-long commitment to peace and human rights.
