The Carter Centre United Kingdom - Board of Trustees

The Carter Centre U.K. supports the work of Carter Center programs implemented in more than 65 countries by raising awareness and funds in Britain and Europe. Chaired by Dame Marjorie Scardino, the board of trustees decides and supports the mission of The Carter Centre U.K. and manages its assets. Company law requires the trustees, who are the directors for the purposes of the Companies Act, to prepare financial statements for each financial period that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and the incoming resources and application of resources, including the net income or expenditure, of the charity for the period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
  • Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently
  • Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent, and
  • Prepare the financial statements on an ongoing basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and that enable them to ensure the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 1985. The trustees also are responsible for safeguarding the assets and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The board of trustees include:

  • William Kleh, retired attorney; formerly general counsel of AMVESCAP Plc.

  • Dame Marjorie Scardino, CBE, chief executive of Pearson plc, International Media Group

  • Dr. Gail E. Thomas, B.A., M.D., Ph.D., surgical oncologist and consultant breast surgeon

  • Henry Tinsley, recently retired chairman of Green & Blacks Chocolate; founder of the Tinsley Foundation, founder director of Waging Peace

  • Rebecca Tinsley, journalist; freelance author; civic activist; trustee of the Tinsley Foundation, member of the London committee of Human Rights Watch
