President Barack Obama this week named 13 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among them, William Foege, MD, professor emeritus in the Rollins School of Public Health. The Medal of Freedom is the Nation's highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. The awards will be presented at the White House in late spring.
William Foege, M.D., M.P.H., former executive director of The Carter Center, served as director of Global 2000, and is currently a Carter Center senior fellow for health policy. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, was also awarded to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in 1999.
