ATLANTA — The Israeli government’s decision to occupy Gaza City risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences and long-lasting political ramifications. Rather than pursuing peace, justice, and a long-term political resolution with the Palestinian people, the Israeli government is doubling down on war and occupation, on top of famine and starvation against Palestinians in Gaza City. The Israeli government has decided to proceed despite serious objections from its own military leadership, contravention of international law, widespread concern for the safety of Israeli hostages, and growing public opposition to the plan, including from the families of those still held captive.
The Carter Center condemns the decision and calls on the Israeli government to pursue a nonmilitarized path to peace, implement an immediate cease-fire, and avoid further unnecessary suffering in Gaza and exacerbation of violence in the West Bank.
The international community, including the United States, must similarly condemn and reject any effort to impose military control over Gaza City and its inhabitants.
