Carter Center Statement of Condolence on the Passing of His Eminence Sheikh Omar Ahmed Tijani Niass

The Carter Center expresses sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and all Tijaniyya Muslims on the passing of His Eminence Sheikh Omar Ahmed Tijani Niass.

Sheikh Omar Niass was dedicated to the pursuit of human dignity and justice, ethical principles common to the religions of the world. He represented his father, His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Tijani Ibrahim Niass leader of the Tijani Sufi order of West Africa, at the Carter Center's 2013 Human Rights Defenders Forum, where his participation reflected a commitment to peace and equality. Carter Center staff and all who had the privilege of working with him will remember Sheikh Omar Niass for his profound spiritual presence and humility.
