Statement from Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on the Death of Jim Wright

For Immediate Release

Rosalynn and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jim Wright, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Jim was a great statesman and a personal friend. As a senior statesman, he was a representative of The Carter Center to observe elections in Haiti in 1990 and in Mexico in 1994. I valued his wise counsel and his commitment to the ideals of human rights, democracy, and social justice in the Americas. His leadership at home and abroad was instrumental in advancing equitable development throughout the world. His family is in our thoughts and prayers. We hope that their warm memories and the love and support of the many people whose lives Jim has touched will be of comfort to them in the days ahead.
