Background:

  • The Carter Center has led the international campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease since 1986, when an estimated 3.5 million cases occurred annually in 21 African and Asian countries. Over the past three decades, incidence of the disease has been reduced by 99.99 percent.
  • Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease features the historic battle against Guinea worm disease, as well as efforts to combat polio, malaria, river blindness, and others. The exhibition is on display from Jan. 11-Oct. 9 at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum and is included with museum admission.

The exhibition has been on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City since January 2015. A version of the exhibition was displayed in London in 2016, and another replication will open in the United Arab Emirates in early 2017.
