We have won a major victory today for millions of people who long have been discriminated against because they have a mental illness or substance use disorder. By passing mental health and addiction parity legislation, Congress has made an important statement that these diseases should be treated like any other physical illness. I hope this will be the beginning of the end of stigma and discrimination against people with mental illnesses. Members of the mental health and substance use communities collaborated to make this day a reality and deserve great credit for their hard-won efforts.
