CNN Newsroom: Carter Center on Nonpartisan Election Monitoring

CNN

Avery Davis-Roberts, director of the Carter Center’s Democracy Program, joined CNN’s Jessica Dean to discuss the Center’s nonpartisan election observation work in Georgia and why independent observation matters.

“We are not focused on the outcome of the election,” Davis-Roberts said. “We’re really focused on the process.”

By observing key parts of the election process and reporting findings publicly, nonpartisan observers can help increase transparency, build public trust and support the election officials who administer elections. Observation also offers citizens another way to engage in democracy beyond casting a ballot.

“It’s a way to participate in this process that is not tied to your political identity,” Davis-Roberts said. “It’s really just part of civic engagement.”
