Volunteer Opportunities

Raise Your Hand

Ugandan school children pose with Carter Center team member.

Waging Peace. Fighting Disease. Building Hope.

These six words embody our mission in a world where people live every day under difficult conditions caused by war, disease, famine, poverty, and oppression. Guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights, The Carter Center strives to alleviate this suffering through projects that prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.

General Information

  • The Volunteer Office at The Carter Center only coordinates in-person volunteering at our offices in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Currently, most new volunteers start as greeters at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum — with the opportunity to assist with other one-time activities as they occur.
  • Remote volunteer activities are sometimes possible for existing volunteers, but remote positions are not currently available.

Volunteer Positions

Jimmy Carter Library and Museum
The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum uses volunteers as museum greeters. They are tasked with welcoming visitors, answering questions, and helping move visitors along at a reasonable pace. Greeters generally fill a 3-to-4-hour morning or afternoon shift, volunteering weekly or in a floating capacity. These volunteers may also become trained docents.

Special Events
Volunteers work in the evenings and on weekends, assisting at meetings, lectures, and parties. Supervised by the Events Office, volunteers help with guests, providing information, directions within the facility, and any assistance to help events run smoothly. Special events volunteers must be at least 21 years old. Volunteer turnover for special events is minimal, so opportunities are limited and new openings are infrequent.

Every year, we celebrate our volunteers with a luncheon to say thanks.

Gardening
Volunteers work in the Center’s gardens, assisting our small landscape crew in maintaining approximately 37 acres of gardens. This work is done on the third Saturday morning of each month. Volunteers are added every three months and must be at least 18 years old to garden, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Docents
Any of the above volunteers may take docent training, when offered, to become a trained tour guide, as a supplement to their regular volunteer assignment. Tour guides conduct a limited number of private tours of The Carter Center offices and/or the Jimmy Carter Museum and Library.
