Tunisia
In 2022, the city of Tunis joined the Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives program, a global campaign to help cities reach more women with information about public services that could benefit their lives.
The Center has worked in Tunisia since 2011 to monitor elections and the country’s constitution-drafting process, as well as to oversee projects to help strengthen democratic institutions.
Our work began in response to the Jasmine Revolution which kicked off in 2010, which eventually toppled the repressive government of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Impact
- Deployed robust teams to observe the 2011 legislative elections and the 2014 presidential and legislative elections
- Observed three elections in less than a month, following the Tunisian president’s death in office forced a tightly compressed electoral timeline
- Returned to observe elections in 2022 after unilateral actions by President Kais Saied threatened the country’s democratic reforms
