IT Data and Mapping Internship

  • IT interns work with programs to gather, clean, organize, and prepare data for analysis, helping the Center reach data visualization goals with new technologies.


The Carter Center Information Technology (IT) department is responsible for supporting organizational missions by providing secure and effective technology platforms. Strategic use of data and visualization of data thru maps is a key initiative. The IT data and mapping intern will be responsible for working with the programs to gather, clean, organize, and prepare data for analysis. They will also move the organization forward in the use of mapping technologies to support the programs and their missions by assisting in mapping exercises, installing and setting up GIS software, developing training and communications about the GIS resources available at the institution, and developing standard operating procedures for use of GIS software. Academic background or interest in global health or international relations is beneficial.

Number of Interns per Semester: 1

Applicant Preferences

  • Excellent diagnostic skills to analyze and identify discrepancies within data sets and identify solutions
  • Proficiency with software tools such as Excel to gather and assess data; SQL, SAS, SATA, SPSS, Tableau or business intelligence tool experience a plus
  • Demonstrated proficiency with ArcGIS version 10+
  • SQL and basic programming or scripting skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in the Azure environment is a plus

Typical Projects

  • Organize and clean data to support mapping and analysis
  • Create maps with existing data for specific program needs
  • Set up ArcGIS server environment
  • Provide guidance on how and when to use which part of the ArcGIS platform
  • Develop training on tools available; provide assistance to users as required
