Communications

  • Communications interns work closely with website and social media staff to raise awareness of the Center’s work, promote news and stories from the field, and conduct research to support department initiatives.

Overview

The Communications Office directs and implements all facets of institutional communications for The Carter Center. The office handles publications, media relations, publicity efforts, social media, website production, webcasts, photo and video archives, and more. To gain a better understanding of Communications’ various roles at The Carter Center, visit the "News & Publications" section on the website and browse our social media channels.

An internship with Communications provides a comprehensive overview of daily communications activities for a nonprofit organization. Interns can expect to gain editorial knowledge and insight, improve planning and project management skills, and learn new tools and technology. Candidates should have an interest or experience in social media, website production, and/or public relations. In addition, an academic background or interest in global health or international relations is beneficial.

Number of Interns per Semester: 1-2

Expected Projects

• Assist in managing content, design, and engagement for the Center’s main website

• Generate social media content, including graphics and videos to help raise awareness of the Center’s work

• Prepare social media event or campaign reports

• Respond to Carter Center communications requests throughout the week

• Draft presentations, research reports, fact sheets, and other materials to support department initiatives

• Assist with staffing and/or reports for ongoing office projects or special events such as Conversations at The Carter Center

• Help to maintain databases of photos and media contacts

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong interest and experience in social media, website production, and/or public relations

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Previous experience updating and managing online platforms and social media helpful

• Multimedia, design, or photographic experience helpful

• Highly organized, productive, results-oriented, self-starter

• Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment

• Awareness of journalistic practice and AP style

• Positive attitude, curiosity, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm
