Carter Center Statement on ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

The Carter Center condemns the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent and calls for calm in the wake of this tragic incident. As the details continue to come into focus, we echo the community’s concerns over the nature of the shooting. We stand with those in Minneapolis who are peaceably demonstrating to demand answers and accountability.

We also condemn the weaponization of our nation’s military and law enforcement to sow fear, incite violence, and chill free speech. Likewise, we condemn any response that seeks to excuse, normalize, or rationalize such acts of violence.

Our thoughts are with Ms. Good’s family, friends, and the entire Minneapolis community as they grieve.

We call upon all Americans to join us in rejecting political violence in all its forms. In the words of President Carter, we must say “no more” to “government actions that undermine our unified democracy.”
