Carter Center Statement on Maria Corina Machado Receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

ATLANTA (Oct. 10, 2025) – The Carter Center congratulates Maria Corina Machado on winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Her work defending democracy in Venezuela is a powerful example of how courageous leaders can stand up against authoritarianism and build a movement for peaceful, democratic change.

In a world where democracy is imperiled, her fearless persistence inspires us to continue our mission of defending democratic principles and human rights — around the world and increasingly in our own country.

As President Carter said in his Nobel address, “The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices.”
