Zell Miller left an indelible mark on the history of Georgia. He was one of Georgia’s longest serving public servants and left our state with a legacy that is highlighted by the Hope Scholarships that provide an education for our young students. This program has been emulated but never surpassed by other states. Growing up in the hills of north Georgia gave Zell a straight-talking approach to politics that left no one in doubt of his views on any subject, and his U.S. Marine background also gave him a patriotic love of both his state and his nation. His love for his family and appreciation for the principles that shaped our nation are a model for anyone interested in service to others.
I began public service in the state senate with Zell in 1963, and we served together as trustees of Mercer University during this past year. He was a good friend, and Rosalynn and I join all Georgians in extending our condolences to Shirley and their family.
