Knowledge is Power

Our research and experience have shown that women who are informed of their rights and of the resources available to them have the power to build and fundamentally change communities. Conversely, without access to information, women are excluded from economic opportunities, denied dignity and autonomy, and cut off from essential services.

The Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, launched in 2021, is an innovative global initiative aimed at empowering women by increasing their access to information about essential municipal services. The campaign supports local governments in dozens of cities around the world so that they can more effectively reach women with information about existing services that could radically improve their lives.

City Spotlight: Guatemala City

Inform Women, Transform Lives works with city governments to identify services that could be useful to women but are underused because of a lack of awareness. We then help cities figure out how to get the word out about those services, providing financial support to underwrite the cost of implementing these new communication strategies.

The campaign also provides small grants to community-based organizations in each city to help raise awareness about municipal services and about women’s right to information. In addition, it commissions murals and art projects that depict the value of information for women.
