Committed to His Community

In Nigeria, The Carter Center and partners have been assisting the Federal Ministry of Health to reduce the country’s disease burden, the highest on the continent.

Guinea worm disease has been eliminated from the country; two states are now free from lymphatic filariasis and river blindness, with programs now expanding into other endemic states; and health teams are making headway controlling trachoma, schistosomiasis, and malaria.

Joel Kasuwa, and tens of thousands of community drug distributors like him, has been crucial to the programs’ success, volunteering his time to deliver preventive medicines and health education that will free his community from these debilitating, neglected diseases.
