14 Human Cases of Guinea Worm Reported in 2023
Eradication of Guinea worm disease remains in sight with only 14* provisional human cases reported worldwide in 2023, The Carter Center announced Thursday. The number matches the lowest annual total of human cases ever reported, following 13 cases in 2022 and 15 in 2021.
When The Carter Center assumed leadership of the global Guinea Worm Eradication Program in 1986, an estimated 3.5 million human cases occurred annually in 21 countries in Africa and Asia.
