Jamaica

We worked with officials in Jamaica for nearly three decades, beginning our work in response to violent elections in the 1980s.

Along with monitoring elections, we helped find common ground — in the country and in the region — and encouraged public debate about transparency in government.

Presently, we partner with the city of Kingston as part of our groundbreaking Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign.

Impact

  • Organized with Jamaican officials to prepare for a conference titled “The Agenda for the Americas for the 21st Century”
  • Observed Jamaican elections in 1997 and 2002, all largely peaceful
  • Supported Jamaica’s legislative efforts in 1998 to pass a corruption prevention act and an access-to-information act

Empowerment through Information

Through its groundbreaking Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, The Carter Center partners with city leaders worldwide to raise awareness about women’s right to access information and to help cities reach women with valuable information and essential municipal services.

Access to this information empowers women with a stronger voice, enabling them to participate in public life, utilize public services, and make more informed decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities. In 2025, this project expanded to partner with the city of Kingston, Jamaica.
