Nigeria
Our collaborative efforts with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health have spared millions from suffering from diseases such as Guinea worm, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, river blindness, trachoma, and malaria.
We also have worked to help build a lasting, sustainable, and peaceful democracy in Africa’s most populous nation. And our groundbreaking Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign has partnered with the cities of Lagos and Abuja to improve women’s lives through access to information.
Short-term Goals
Together with the Ministry of Health, we are building healthier, more resilient communities by controlling and eliminating diseases.
Impact
- Nigeria has eradicated Guinea worm disease nationwide and eliminated trachoma as a public health problem in two states.
- Nearly 24 million people in five states no longer require treatment for river blindness because transmission has been interrupted there.
- Seven million people no longer fear contracting lymphatic filariasis because LF has been eliminated as a public health problem in their states.
- Children in two states have received 33 million doses of praziquantel since 1999, greatly reducing risks associated with schistosomiasis.
