Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Carter Center has worked in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2006, when it observed the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Since then, we’ve established permanent offices in DRC and supported citizen election observation networks, human rights defenders, and locally led efforts to increase the transparency and accountability of mining companies working in the country.
Impact
- We sent teams to observe four elections between 2006-2023, and after each, we made substantive recommendations for reforms that would improve the process and increase public confidence in the results.
- Since 2007, our Human Rights House has provided training, resources, and tools to help organizations be more effective advocates for human rights at the local and national levels.
- We’ve worked since 2009 to strengthen civil society organizations’ ability to engage decision-makers and to advocate for protections and remuneration from the mining industry.organizations’ skills to engage and influence decision-makers and protect communities from the extraction industries.
