Dominican Republic
The Carter Center supports ministries of health to eliminate two mosquito-borne infections — malaria and lymphatic filariasis — on Hispaniola. The island, shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is the last repository of these devastating diseases in the Caribbean.
We also have partnered with the city of Santo Domingo to empower women through access to information.
Short-term Goals
We are eliminating malaria and lymphatic filariasis alongside our partners and increasing access to information for women.
Impact
- Malaria cases reduced by 50% since 2010
- Validation for elimination of lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem by the World Health Organization is on the horizon
