Empowerment through Information

Through the groundbreaking Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, The Carter Center partners with city leaders worldwide to raise awareness about women’s right to access information and to help cities reach women with valuable information and essential municipal services.

In 2022, the British city of Birmingham joined Inform Women, Transform Lives, a global campaign to help municipal governments reach more women with information about services available to them. Based on the needs of women in their community, Birmingham focused its campaign on services for women experiencing sexual and gender-based violence. When the project launched in Birmingham, City Councilor John Cotton said, “It will have a direct impact on the everyday lives of women in our city.”

  • The campaign uses traditional and social media marketing to raise awareness of city services that may be beneficial.
  • An important component of the project in Birmingham is to raise awareness of what constitutes domestic violence so that government agencies, social services, and survivors are better equipped to respond.

In 2023, Glasgow, Scotland, joined the Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign. The city tailored its project to raise awareness of services available for survivors of coercive relationships. When the project launched, Glasgow’s Lord Provost Councilor Jacqueline McLaren said: “We know information enables women because it increases their awareness of economic opportunities, allows them to meaningfully participate in decision-making and helps them access public services. That doesn’t just help women—it helps everyone.”

  • Inform Women, Transform Lives helps government agencies, social services, and survivors understand how coercive relationships appear.
  • The project partners with the Glasgow City Council and the Glasgow Girls Club to share information about gender-based violence services for young women through the web and social media.

In 2025, Cardiff, Wales, and Liverpool, England joined the Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign.
