As Trump Welcomes Xi, More Americans Have a Positive View of China

President Trump’s shift to a friendlier stance on China mirrors a startling change in public opinion. Across the political spectrum, more Americans are seeing China in a positive light. In the lead up to this week’s Trump-Xi Summit, the Carter Center China Focus team spoke with Anton Troianovski of The New York Times about the shifting perceptions of Americans on China.

Senior Program Associate Dr. Nick Zeller was quoted about the trend of younger Americans having warmer perceptions of China: “You see fears of what’s happening to America be refracted through assessments of China. This positive assessment toward China has more to do with American political tumult domestically than it does China itself.”
