ATLANTA (Nov. 3, 2026) — The Carter Center is supporting nonpartisan election observers in five states today: Georgia, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, and New Mexico. Each state’s mission will assess the quality of the election process, ensuring that applicable local, state, and federal laws are consistently and correctly applied.

In total, more than 1,000 trained observers affiliated with the Center and its partners are expected to watch the process, which started with the preelection testing of election equipment and will continue through the postelection certification of results and audits. The results of observations will be shared in preliminary reports later this week and in final reports in the coming weeks.

The Carter Center works to strengthen democracy by building trust in elections and fostering peaceful civic engagement. According to a 2022 study at MIT, most Americans across the political spectrum have higher trust in election outcomes when nonpartisan election observers monitor the process. Before observing, volunteers complete training on state-specific election laws, procedures, and safeguards. The nonpartisan observers watch the process unfold, document what they see, and put the facts on the record, giving voters and officials a shared, trustworthy account of what happened.
