“Ted Turner was larger than life: a visionary in the media world, a pioneer in philanthropy, an Atlanta legend, and a devoted friend of my grandfather, President Jimmy Carter.

He led one of the most remarkable lives in American history—from growing up in Georgia, to the America’s Cup, to the Superstation, to the creation of CNN.

He was one of our nation’s greatest philanthropists and conservationists. His decision to give away a billion dollars set an example that paved the way for generations of philanthropy.

He was a great citizen of Atlanta and a great friend to my grandparents. He served on The Carter Center Board of Councilors for nearly 40 years. They caught countless fish together, cheered for the Braves together, and joined forces to change many, many lives.

Ted Turner was one of a kind. We will miss him as a person, but his impact will live on.”
